Former Green Eagles Captain and super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu says Nigeria must continue to give home based players a chance to feature in the national team.
Chukwu told naijafootball247 (now NigerianFootballer) that part of the reasons for Nigeria’s poor performance at the World Cup had to do with this fact.
“When you depend so much on foreign based players you must realise that you cannot invite them home until their leagues are over or until they have a free week or weekend unlike the home based players that can be invited at anytime,” Chukwu said.
“The past is the past and I am happy with the new spirit where the home based players have excelled in the few games they have played.
“We have always need a situation where players know they have a chance at the national team if they do well in the league not when they have to travel abroad to play for the national team,” Chukwu said.
He told naijafootball247 that in his time as coach he blooded lots of home based players and wondered why coaches after him failed to do same.
“In my time players like Romanus Orjinta, Vincent Enyeama, Seyi Olofinjana, Obinna Nwaneri and Uga Okpara were all homebased .
“It has always been my belief that we get our defenders from the home league and then we can start looking outwards if we think the midfielders and strikers are not as good.”
