The Nigeria Premier League may get new title sponsors in a fortnight if reports reaching naijafootball247 are credible.
A source in the board said they were rounding up discussions with a reputable multinational company and will announce them as sponsors within the next two weeks.
Telecommunications giants, Globacom were sponsors of the league for three seasons but pulled out shortly before their contract expired at the end of last season leaving the new Nigeria Premier League, NPL board led by Davidson Owumi searching for new sponsors for the league.
“We have got a sponsor and they will be announced within two weeks. I cannot say anything now but that Nigerian football lovers will not have to wait for too long to see new sponsors for the league,” our source said.
Meanwhile the much awaited kick off date for the 2010/11 Nigeria Premier League season may be announced by Saturday.
The NPL had announced September 25, 2010 as kick off date for the league but the ousted Nigeria Football Association, NFA board discarded that date claiming they had two cases from the last football season to look into.
They had wanted to investigate the case of Bayelsa United, relegated but wanting to replay a league match against Wikki Tourist and a petition from former Bayelsa United chairman, Victor Baribote Rumson claiming Davidson Owumi should not be the NPL chairman.
However, on the annulment of the elections by a Lagos High Court, the sports ministry have directed the senior staff at the NFA to fix a date for the league to start and that date may not exceed October 8th 2010.
