Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has applauded his players after they showed remarkable spirit to come from a goal down to beat Ghana’s Black Stars 2-1 and book their place in Saturday’s WAFU Cup final.

Daniel Gyamfi fired the Black Stars in front from the penalty spot after he was clambered into by a backtracking Gege Soriola on 67 minutes.

Ekigho Ehiosun levelled with seven minutes of regulation time left and rifled in the winner with barely a minute of extra time remaining and Siasia was pleased by the effort of his boys

“Even if we had lost the match today, I would still have been proud of the boys because it was clear to see that they gave everything and played to instructions,” Siasia said.

“I want to applaud them. They played a difficult opponent but even when we were a goal down, they played like champions. Hopefully, on Saturday, they will be crowned champions.”

Defender Soriola’s man of the match performance was one of many all over the park for Nigeria and Siasia admitted that the big defender may well have played himself into reckoning for the main squad

“I have known Gege for a while. He was in my Olympic team, but today he played one of his greatest games.

“Central defence is one of my biggest problems in the Super Eagles and from the way he has played today, he showed that he has been working hard and I am very proud of him.

“We’ll see what happens. If he can keep up this level of performance, anything can happen.”
