Former Super Eagles midfielder, Friday Ekpo says he does not believe Nigeria deserve to be called African giants despite being champions of the continent.
Ekpo told naijafootball247.com that Nigeria may have won the AFCON last year but the country had fallen too far behind other African countries for its own good.
“I know we like to give ourselves names because we feel good about it, but the truth is that we currently do not deserve to be called giants of Africa.
“We fell way behind and we should right now be thinking of how to develop ourselves and take our rightful place no just on the continent but in the world,” Ekpo said.
“I like what Keshi is doing. I do not know if he will remain after the World Cup but he has taken us to this level which is far better than we were before he came.
“Now the boys must keep their heads and play their game and stop thinking they are what they are not. I believe in the Eagles to excel,” Friday Ekpo said.
Friday Ekpo played his football for Calabar Rovers, Abiola Babes, Leventis United, Shell (Gabon) and Sharks.
He was top scorer in the Nigerian League in 1986 and played for the Super Eagles at the AFCON in 1902 scoring in the third place match against Cameroon
