Head coach of the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U20 side, Manu Garba has told
naijafootball247.com (now Nigerianfootballer.com) that Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho may not have it
easy breaking into the side.
Iheanacho was the star of the U17 team two years ago when they won the FIFA U17 World Cup and since moved to Manchester City but Garba says it will not be business as
“In this team there will be no automatic shirt for any of the players,” Garba told naijafootball247.com.
“If you remember in the qualifiers for the Africa Youth Championships, he was invited for the games against Tanzania and started on the bench in both games.
“When he comes back for the World Cup preparations, he has to show us he is capable of either picking a shirt or at least making the twenty one man list to the World Cup,” Garba told naijafootball247.com.
In the absence of Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi has blossomed into the most dangerous striker in the team, emerging their top scorer and only recently aiding the U23s to victory in Zambia with a brace.
