7 Minutes with China: When a trophy or two counts for nothing

Nigeria’s
Super Eagles will for the first time go to the World Cup with more
joyful stories coming out of the camp of the team than negative and
this is a good thing, no doubt.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       First,
there was no crises concerning money and
most of all the jerseys got the whole world talking with
the universe agreeing with
one voice that the Eagles had won the jersey World
Cup.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              The jerseys sold out in record time
and there were photos on social media of people who had no links with
Nigeria buying it because of its beauty and that was
also a good thing.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Nigeria had won that World Cup, the
jersey World Cup. It was not just the jersey that
wowed the world but the attire of the team as they arrived in Russia
for the mundial.                                                                                                                                          Again the World held hands, sang kumbaya and
declared
Nigeria
to be the best dressed team out of the 32 and did we deserve it?                                                                                                                                                                                                          I
think we did, but that was not all, was it?
Another noticeable trend was that of the official Super Eagles song
for the World Cup. Every time the team has a World Cup to play, there
will be a theme song but this time, there has been more than one
theme song.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        First,
I heard a song titled Issa goal and in it were the voices of Naira
Marley, Olamide and Lil Kesh. Was it a theme song for the Eagles as
they prepared for the World
Cup? Yes it was. Dedicated
to the Super Eagles as they headed to the World Cup.
Then I attended the Pitch awards in Port Harcourt where they
introduced the artiste, Maleke who did a rendition of his song,
Victory Song. They called it the official theme song of the Super
Eagles and it did not sound too bad, in fact I loved it
immediately.                                                                                                                                                            A week before the World Cup kicked off,
there was a launch party for another theme song for the Super Eagles
by Olamide and Phyno titled, Dem go Chop am. This
one was sponsored, I think, by AITEO and was declared as the official
Super Eagles World Cup song.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      A
few days later there was another by Adekunle Gold and Mayorkun titled
the Believe Anthem. Do
not forget that Tony One Week had already released a theme song for
the World Cup and there was
the regular Austino Milado Dodorima remix getting rotation on radio.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  When you have as many as five theme or official songs for the World
Cup based around one team it certainly means interest in the team is
high and this is good for the Eagles that the entertainment world
have decided to be part of what they are doing.

The jerseys were embraced by Nigerians and non Nigerians alike

                                                                                          One
can easily say Nigeria
have won the jersey World Cup, the dressing World Cup and the theme
song World Cup but what will it profit us if we win all these
“meaningless” World Cups and are disgraced out of the real
one?                                                                                                                    As much as what has happened with the
jerseys, dressing and theme songs are good for the image of the team,
I want to believe Gernot Rohr and his charges know the real World Cup
starts on Saturday
against Croatia. Watching Egypt and Morocco lose
on Friday
to added time goals should only just tell the Eagles that a football
match is not played for 90 minutes but for how long the referee wants
it to last before he ends it with his whistle.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           The confidence of Nigerian fans towards the team dipped after the
last four friendly matches before the World Cup and the injury
concerns regarding Leon Balogun has not in any way helped
matters.                                                                                                                                                          Whatever Gernot Rohr and the Super
Eagles plan to do tomorrow, they should know that losing is not an
option.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         If  the Super Eagles are disgraced
out of the World Cup, the world will quickly
forget the beauty of the football jerseys. It
is always good to start your World Cup campaign on a high.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The ball
is in the court of the Super Eagles. let’s forget the pre- World
Cup trophies we have already won and face the real
thing.                                                                                                                                                                                                    #SoarSuperEagles
