The Nigeria U20 national team, Flying Eagles started their ongoing 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a convincing win over Qatar in Poland.

Prior to today’s game, the Flying Eagles have failed to win any of their last two opening World Cup matches, losing 3-2 to Portugal in 2013 and 4-2 to Brazil in 2015.

However, 2 goals in each half of the game from Maxwell Effiom, Henry Offia, Dele Bashir and Aliu Salawudeen broke the jinx.

Maxwell Effiom got the seven –time African champions in front after only 12 minutes, and Sweden –based Henry Offia doubled the advantage 12 minutes later.

Nigeria kept a firm hand on things from that point on, and Offia should have made it three early in the second half but saw his weak effort parried for a corner kick.

Manchester City’s Ayotomiwa Bashiru showed shrewdness and clinical competence when put through by a great pass, to make it three in the 68th minute.

Defender Aliu Salawudeen, on the books of Amuneke Academy, rifled into the net for Nigeria’s fourth after the ball fell into his path from a corner kick.

The Flying Eagles who are in group D along side Qatar, Ukraine and the United States of America, will be looking to build on their 4-0 win over Qatar when they go up against the American side on Monday, May 27, while Ukraine will trade tackles with Qatar.
