Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles team will not play in the Championship for African Nations, CHAN as they were eliminated by Togo on Saturday.
After losing the 1st leg 4-1, Sikiru Alimi scored twice, one in each half, but it was not enough to see the Eagles through as they needed one more goal to qualify, as long as they kept a clean sheet.
Imama Amapakabo walked a tight rope ever since that 4-1 loss in the 1st leg.
After Alimi scored in the 9th minute, it seemed like hope alive for the team but the Togolese held on till the end of the first half.
Alimi, however, is guilty of throwing away begging chances in the first half that could have seen him, maybe get a hat-trick of goals.
When Alimi scored again in the 71st minute, it seemed Nigeria would get the third as there was immense pressure on the Togolese but they held on, even with ten added time minutes to keep the scoreline at 2-0.
Togo qualify 4-3 on aggregate.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the first two editions of the competition, then Stephen Keshi led the team to the semi-finals in 2014, then Sunday Oliseh to the competition proper in 2016.
