Enyimba’s coach, Usman Abdallah shocked the footballing world in February 2019 when he claimed Enyimba had won away from home in a game that clearly ended in a draw.
In the Nigeria Professional Football League for that season, wins on the road were scarce for Enyimba who seriously wanted to win away from home to make it to the season-ending Super 6 then Abdallah made that shocking proclamation.
At the start of that season, Enyimba had lost 3-2 at Kwara United on January 20, lost 1-0 at Rangers on January 27 and then lost 2-1 to Wikki Tourists on February 7, 2019, so the pressure was clearly on Usman Abd’llah as it was beginning to be said that he could not muster the club enough to win on the road. Then the shocking road win.
Enyimba had gone to Niger Tornadoes on February 13 and the encounter ended 0-0. However, Enyimba scored a goal that was ruled out, but Abd’llah would hear none of it.
At the Post Match meeting, he clearly said Enyimba won the game and he would take it as their first away win of the season.
“We were planning to come and get our first away win and when you look at it, technically we got our first away win,” Abd’llah said in February without even giving away a smile or smirk.
“The referee had given us the goal, but the linesman just disallowed it.
“This is our fourth match without conceding a goal home and away and we are scoring goals too. Like today we scored a clean goal that was just disallowed. So, we won this game technically,” The Enyimba coach said.
Rivers coaches leave to Spain with funny advise
In February 2019, the Rivers State government-sponsored certain coaches to Spain in preparation for the start of the Real Madrid academy.
On departure to Madrid the state sports commissioner, Boma Iyaye gave them some down to earth but shocking advise at a press conference that accompanied their departure.
“As all of you leave the shores of Port Harcourt, please, please, do not go to Spain and misbehave. And I know you are all responsible gentlemen so you will not go to Spain and run away.
“So, go there, finish your training and come back to Port Harcourt to impart on the younger ones that we have,” Boma Iyaye said.
Incidentally, none of the coaches “ran away” in Spain.
Why Iheanacho missed the AFCON
It was also in February 2019 that Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr explained what was wrong with Kelechi Iheanacho at Leicester City.
During a press interview after naming his team for the doubleheader games in March against Seychelles and Egypt, Rohr explained why Iheanacho was not playing games at Leicester City.
“Kelechi has a problem with the club. They told me already that he is missing professional attitude, always funny all the time now they have changed the coach, I told him it is better to show your new coach in his fifa window that you can be a sharing player again,” Rohr said.
“That is why he was resting in Leicester but I hope that he will play much more in the future, but he must change his behavior and be more professional,” Gernot Rohr said.
Obviously, Kelechi Iheanacho did not change as he still did not get games at Leicester City and was eventually dropped from the team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Review of the year in football continues with March 2019 on Thursday.
