While Heartland stunned Cup holders, Enyimba 2-0 in Aba, struggling Rangers found form to win in Warri 2-1 to make good their promise of a late challenge for the title.
But another big story of the day was Rivers United surge to go level on points at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with a win at home to leaders, Lobi Stars 2-1 in the top of the table clash of the Matchday 15.
It was another action-filled matchday in the NPFL with 21 goals scored from nine matches. Here is www.npfl.ng wrap of all the matches played today.
Rivers United 2-1 Lobi Stars – United Go Joint Top
It was a highly entertaining encounter at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt which ended up with Rivers United winning the high-profile match.
The home side were the fastest out of the blocks as Nelson Esor opened the scoring in the second minute but Lobi Stars drew level in the 19th minute through John Lazarus.
However, Rivers United had the last laugh as Malachi Ohawume scored the winner in the 75th minute to seal all three points.
Rivers United are now level on points with Lobi Stars at the top of the table and are only behind on goal difference.
Sunshine Stars 2-1 Plateau United – United Fail to win again
Plateau United are now three matches without a win after losing 2-1 to Sunshine Stars at Akure.
Goals from Omo Jesus Ogunniyi in the 11th minute and Fuad Ekeleojuoti in the 33rd minute put Sunshine Stars two goals up in the first half. Plateau United fought back strongly in the second half and got a goal back through Oche Ochowechi but it was not enough for them to avoid defeat.
Sunshine Stars have now won three consecutive matches and are now fourth on the table, level on points with Plateau United.
Akwa United 0-2 Kwara United – Early Season Demon Reappear
Akwa United’s winning streak came to an end after a shock 2-0 home defeat to Kwara United.
Alao Danbani scored a brace for United as they earned a memorable win at the Godswill International Stadium.
As for Akwa United, it missed a chance to move to the top three.
Elsewhere in the NPFL, it was Oriental Derby Day as Enyimba hosted Heartland and Abia Warriors battled FC Ifeanyi Ubah.
The champions Enyimba were shocked at home as it lost 2-0 to Heartland.
Abubakar Sadiq gave Heartland the lead in 30th minute while Chukwuemeka Obinna doubled the lead just before half-time.
Enyimba’s woes continues as they have failed to win in their last five NPFL matches.
Abia Warriors defeated FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium. Bello Lookman gave the Warriors the lead in the 28th minute but Jimoh Gbadamosi equalized for FCIU just after half time.
Yakub Hammed secured all three points for Abia Warriors after scoring in the 75th minute.
In Lagos, Joshua Akpudje starred for hosts, MFM scoring all three goals in a 2-1 win. The first was an own goal but he would go ahead to score the rest two for his side in each half to assuage the fans.
