It was a tragic Sunday on March 22, 2020 as news filtered that two players of Nigeria Professional Football League side, Enugu Rangers were involved in a car crash on their way to Lagos after the league was called off.
One of them, Ifeanyi George played for the Homebased Super Eagles team, known as CHAN Eagles.
The other player was Emmanuel Ogbu, while the third occupant of the car, a friend of the duo also perished.
The players were traveling back to Lagos after their club announced a ten-day break following the indefinite suspension of the Nigeria Professional Football League because of fear of the spread of the Wuhan virus in the country.
Chairman of the League Management Company, LMC, Shehu Dikko has expressed shock at the accident.
Dikko who contacted the club Management on getting the report of the accident, commiserated with the Club Management, team members and fans of the Enugu based club as well as the players’ immediate family.
“We sympathise with the club at this trying time and pray for the repose of his soul and wish the injured ones a speedy recovery”, the LMC Chairman told the club’s team manager, Amobi Ezeaku and coach, Salisu Yusuf in the phone call.
He urged all Nigeria Football Professional League (NPFL) stakeholders to take all necessary precautions to stay safe amidst the growing Wuhan Virus pandemic.
“It is instructive that we should as much as is possible limit our movements, restrict social contacts and adhere to health protocols set out by relevant global, national and state agencies for the containment of COVID 19″, Dikko appealed.
George, according to the Rangers Media Officer died on the spot after the vehicle he was traveling in with a teammate ran into a stationary articulated vehicle along Agbor-Benin road.
LMC is in contact with the club to await further details of the incident.
General Manager Enugu Rangers, Davidson Owumi said, ‘We just heard this disturbing news this morning and what we hear is not palatable. I await information from my officials that are already on their way to the spot where the accident was said to have taken place. We call for prayers in this hour of pains.”
Just two Sundays ago, Nasarawa United defender, Chineme Martins collapsed and died in a League game against Katsina United.
Other clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League have continued to send condolence messages to Enugu Rangers following the death of their player.
