Enyimba goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai believes Enyimba deserve more respect than they are currently getting and wants the League Management Company, LMC to see them as title favourites.
Afelokhai says the LMC should see Enyimba as the best team to represent the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL in Africa as they consider different options to end the season.
Afelokhai, in an online interview, said that the League Management Company should consider Enyimba as continental favourites before ending the League.
“It is not because I am in Enyimba, but we still have five outstanding matches to play,
“If we play these five outstanding games, we will see ourselves in the first position.
“Moreover, Enyimba is a club in Nigeria that hardly ever fails to represent Nigeria on the continent.
“Many times Enyimba has rescued Nigeria from the disgrace of losing a slot in Africa and if you watch this year’s competition, it was Enyimba that helped Nigeria or else we would have had just one representative.”
Afelokhai said it will be a mistake by the LMC to hand the League title over to Plateau United who currently on top of the log.
“You can’t expect a club like Enyimba to be out of the continental competition by giving the League to Plateau United.
“If you want to make a decision like that you must consider a club like Enyimba, a club that is so important, very important in terms of football on the continent.”
Afelokhai suggested that the LMC adopt a Super 6 format which he thinks will produce more credible winners.
“What they just need to do is to choose six clubs to go out there to challenge themselves like they did last year, I mean the Super Six.
“This is a better option, but to give the league to Plateau will not be the right decision because Enyimba is not a small club that should be out of the continent because there is hardly any year that Enyimba does not represent Nigeria.”
The goalkeeper added that Enyimba can still become League champions this year.
“We have the chance to become the champions this year and win the league because we have good five outstanding matches, so it is a great advantage for us to win four or draw one because you know what is at stake to play on the continent.
“Most of us are here because of continental football. You can’t just expect us to allow the continental ticket to go out of our hands and you know every player wants to play on the continent and that is why they are in Enyimba,” Afelokhai said.
Enyimba currently occupy the 5th position on the log with five matches outstanding before the suspension of the Nigeria professional football league on March 27 due to COVID 19.
