There are plenty of midweek football actions across Europe, Africa and Asia today. The focus, however, is on the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League which concludes its opening match week fixtures today.
At the Allianz Arena, Nigerian born Austrian defender David Alaba will lead the defence line for European Champions, Bayern Munich when they start their title defence against Atlético Madrid on home soil.
Bayern, reigning holders of the day have won their first UCL home matchday in each of the last seven seasons, winning by an odd-numbered margin on six occasions. Over in the Bundesliga, meanwhile, Bayern have seen a majority (five) of their last nine home league wins produce over 2.5 total second-half goals.
If counting only the regulation 90 minutes in their extra-time win at Anfield in March, Atlético Madrid have in fact lost five of their last seven European away clashes – that excludes UCL results on neutral turf. All five of those 90-minute defeats saw them lose the first half 1-0, conceding the goal responsible for that within the 31st minute-HT period on four occasions.
Elsewhere, in the English Championship, Watford will be hoping to build on their impressive away win at Derby County when they play host to Blackburn at the Vicarage Road. While Nigerian forward Isaac Success is sidelined due to achilles tendon injury, his compatriot William Troost-Ekong is expected to lead the defence for the ‘Hornets’.
Watford’s 1-0 away victory in their previous Championship outing was noteworthy as each of their five league games have now witnessed under 1.5 goals, with four featuring a 1-0 scoreline either way. Stretching back to 2015, the hosts have lost just one of their last nine second-tier home matches (W7, D1, L1), with six of their seven wins during that run being accompanied by a clean sheet.
After scoring an average of 3.67 goals per fixture across their opening three Championship games, Blackburn Rovers have now failed to find the net in each of their last two league matches (D1, L1). This Rovers squad will be keen to score here though, or they’ll be remembered as the first Backburn side to draw a blank in three successive Championship matches since 2016!
