It’s the first Sunday of the New Year 2021, having many European Leagues returning from the festive break. While actions continue in the English Premier League, some other big leagues including the German Bundesliga and Italian Serie A join the Spanish La Liga as the latest leagues to resume hostility after winter hiatus.
Kicking off the Super Sunday program in the English Premier League is the clash between Newcastle United and Leicester City at St. James’ Park. The Super Eagles duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho are expected to start for the visiting Foxes.
Newcastle may have ended the year with a solid point against the champions, but the omens aren’t good for them going into today’s clash.
Newcastle have lost their first league game in six of the last eight calendar years (W1 D1), including a 0-3 home defeat to Leicester in their first game of 2020. On the other hand, the Foxes haven’t lost their first league game in any of the last 12 calendar years (W8 D4).
Leicester’s great record in their year openers could continue here, given their fantastic record against the Magpies. Newcastle have lost seven of their last nine Premier League meetings with Leicester (W2), losing both against the Foxes in 2019-20 by an aggregate score of 0-8.
Leicester have also won their last four Premier League away games against Newcastle, keeping three clean sheets in this run. With the visitors winning six of their eight league away days this term.
Elsewhere, in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Nigerian defender Zaidu Sanusi is expected to lead the line for the defending champions FC Porto when they entertain Moreirense at Estádio do Dragão.
After an indifferent start to the campaign, Porto have hit their straps and have since gone on to win six league games on the trot, breathing life into their league aspirations.
As a result, Porto now sit four points adrift of league-leaders Sporting Lisbon and will be hoping to heap more pressure on their rivals – who they are set to meet in the Taca de Liga semi-final in the coming weeks – by securing three points come later tonight.
The reigning champions have a tough forthcoming schedule with a trip to Famalicao followed by a visit from rivals Benfica, while cup duties will also take centre stage as Porto continue to challenge for all domestic silverware.
Moreirense come into this fixture on a mixed run of form that has seen them lose two, draw two and win one in their last five. Still, they remain seventh in the league table and will have hopes of hunting down those occupying the European qualifying spots.
That said, a poor run could easily see Peixoto’s side slip down the league and into trouble given that they are only four points clear of the relegation spaces.
Ahead of the trip to the Estadio do Dragao, Moreirense will be determined to put in a much more competitive display than the last time they travelled to Porto.
Other Nigerian players expected to be in action today include Chigozie Awaziem for Boavista away at Portuguese Primeira Liga mid-table team Maritimo; Simeon Nwankwo for Italian Serie A basement club Crotone away at Inter Milan; Kelechi Nwakali for Huesca at home to the Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona; Ramon Azeez for Granada away at the struggling Spanish La Liga side Eibar.
