Dolphins Football Academy and SKE won their Match Day 1 games at the Rivers NationWide League One Pre-season tournament.
Dolphins FA earned the maximum points with a 3-2 victory over Willbros FC in the first game which was decided at the Training Pitch of Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Sagbega Benson opened the scoring for Willbros in the 37th minute before Kolapo Ismalia restored parity with six minutes to the end of the first half.
Substitute Chima Kelvin gave Dolphins FA the lead with a sumptuous free-kick in the 53rd minute. They got the two-goal cushion courtesy of Goodluck Benjamin before Michale Akindele scored Willbros’ second goal in the 68th minute.
Coach Onuoha Chigozie of Dolphins FA praised his players for the victory.
“It’s a result achieved by hard work. They put in their best which paid off. I thank the lads for their doggedness. After the first half, I instructed them to be mobile in the game and they applied the instructions which gave us the win.”
Coach Prince Abedi of Willbros FC suggested that is was a mistake from his team that caused the loss.
“It was some mistake from the team and hopefully in the next match, we will put things right. Willbros tried to play good football but our finishing was poor today which we will work on.”
In the second game of Week 1, SKE FC got the better of their host Benedi United in a keenly contested encounter.
Hamza Afolabi converted from the spot in the 15th minute for Benedi United before Ebere Akaka restored parity for his side with a cool spot-kick on the 32nd minute. Samuel Monday added the second goal for SKE FC five minutes later and the eventual winner.
Coach Ifeanyi Nwachukwu of SKE said after the game that they had to put themselves together after conceding.
“After conceding early, we decided to put ourselves together and they started playing what we instructed them to play. The players played to our plans because we used a new pattern today and it worked for us.”
Emma Okon, coach of Benedi United blamed a loss of concentration.
“My players lost concentration the moment we conceded which demoralized them. We made changes at half-time despite missing my players missing chances in the game.”
Week 2 matches will see Dolphins FA take on Benedi United on 14th February 2021 while SKE FC host Willbros FC on 16th February 2021.
