Spotlight on Nigerian Players in League Actions across Europe

Suspended Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi will watch from the sideline as his faltering West Bromwich Albion welcome Brighton to the Hawthorns for Premier League three-pointer.

Nothing short of a win against Brighton will do if West Brom are to rekindle their flickering survival hopes, though Albion’s lack of punch in the final third could hamper their chances again on Saturday.

West Brom have scored just nine goals in 12 Premier League fixtures since Sam Allardyce’s appointment in December, and they looked woefully short of quality up front again in their 0-0 draw at Burnley last time out.

Brighton somehow contrived to lose at home to Crystal Palace in their last top flight test, despite racking up 25 attempts to the Eagles’ three in 2-1 reverse that was hard to digest.

Monday’s frustrating defeat pushed Brighton’s winless run to three games, and Albion’s inability to turn promising approach play into goals continues to hold them back.

In the English Championship, former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel will lead his Stoke City team for a tricky away encounter against the resurgent Brentford at Griffin Park.

Brentford breathed a sigh of relief in midweek as they ended their mini rot in style against Sheffield Wednesday and the Bees can follow-up on Saturday against a Stoke side without a win in eight on the road (D6, L2).

After a disastrous run of three straight defeats, it really was a must win affair for Brentford in midweek when they entertained second bottom Sheffield Wednesday at Griffin Park. The Bees obliged and emerged comfortable 3-0 victors at full time, though their grasp on second place is no stronger following wins for Swansea and Watford on the same night.

Still in the English Championship, another Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong will be in action for in-form Watford when they embark on a trip to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth.

Watford haven’t recorded five straight wins in almost six years, in their last season in the Championship before winning promotion. They could match that run on Saturday, with their recent winning streak putting them level on points with second-placed Brentford.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth have struggled since appointing Jonathan Woodgate until the end of the season. After losing their last two games, they now have more Championship losses in 2021 (six) than all but two sides.

Meanwhile, no team have picked up more points in 2021 than Watford. Having started the season with a poor away record, 11 points from their last five trips has boosted their record on their travels.

Other Nigerian players expected to be in action today include: Tyronne Ebuehi for FC Twente away to Dutch Eredivise mid-table Heracles; Samuel Kalu for Bordeaux at home to French Ligue 1 surprise package Metz; Zaidu Sanusi for FC Porto at home to Portuguese Primeira Liga arch rivals Sporting Lisbon; Oghenekaro Etebo for Galatasaray at home to Turkish Super Lig relegation bound Erzurum BB.

Remember to always bet responsibly. Always avoid staking what you cannot afford losing!

May you play along!
