Three matches in week two of the Port Harcourt City League took place on Wednesday as Abali United and MCWJEF Soccer Academy earned their first victories while Port Harcourt City FC continued to struggle.
Abali United started the game on a good note with half-chances that didn’t result in a goal. In the 10th minute, Prince Amadi saw his teammate, Kinikanwo Amadi in space and floated a cross onto his path. He controlled the ball and unleashed a shot that was blocked by a Corinthians defender. The skipper of Abali, Chinda Kaka also an opportunity to score but he sent his shot well wide from goal.
Corinthians FC came close to open the scoring in the 20th minute when Delima Ibibiya threaded purposefully and laid a pass to Nnamdi Samson whose effort was punched out by Godknows Oshionya.
Four minutes later, Wobo Kalagbor tested the Corinthians goalkeeper, Berry Samson with a right-footed shot that was parried out of safety. Berry was called to action in the half-hour mark to punch out Wobo’s shot from 25 yards.
Godknows made a point-blank save to deny John Ebinbo’s header four minutes before the break. Both sides went into the interval goalless.
At the restart, Abali continued their quest for a breakthrough but were denied by a coordinated and solid Corinthians defense.
The breakthrough for Abali came in the 74th minute when a thumping header by Chisom Okwuodu went past Berry. Despite a late surge by Corinthians, Abali were able to withstand the pressure to amass the maximum points.
Godknows Oshionya of Abali won the Shoesky Man of the match award.
In the second game, Port Harcourt City FC shared the spoils with Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Sealions.
A chance for an early lead for PHC FC went begging in the 5th minute. Robert Owhordu missed a sitter after he was put through on goal by Keston Friday. In the 17th minute, IAUE Sealions showstopper, Ebom Solomon denied Mfon Udoh after he roamed forward instinctively and unleashed a shot.
IAUE Sealions were pegged in their half with PHC FC having a swell of the ball possession. Felix Nwachukwu failed to give PHC the lead when he nodded wide from close range.
Chijioke Keshi of PHC FC introduced fresh legs to bolster his attack. Johnbull Ibinabo and Theophilus Jaja replaced Keston Friday and Robert Owhorodu.
IAUE Sealions upped their game to take the lead five minutes after the break. A composed finish by Sam Sunday gave the state-owned university team the lead after he was expertly played through by Victor Nwifa.
PHC FC wasted no time to get back into the game with the equalizer in the 53rd minute. A brilliant free-kick by Abuma King rattled the upright and fell nicely to Nelson Abraham who slammed home from the easiest of finishes.
Victor Nwifa who came in as a substitute for injured Peter Olawole changed the game for IAUE Sealions as he floated inside instinctively and provided options through the middle.
Towards the last quarter of the game, IAUE Sealions dominated proceedings to give PHC FC a torrid time. In the last game of the day, MCWJEF amassed the maximum points against Dolphins FA courtesy of a disciplined display.
Coach Ndubuisi Ihejirika’s MCWJEF side would have taken the lead 60 seconds after the kick-off when Tamunosusu Samuel made a darting run into the box and unleashed a shot. Obeke Christian made a fine save to deny him.
MCWJEF kept on asking the questions in the opening 10 minutes. Takena Stephen turned his marker inside and out and tried the improbable from a tight angle that rattle the crossbar.
However, Dolphins came close to score when Aniebet Sunday tried to score with his finest trademarks from a free-kick. Chinedu Iwu was equal to the task to punch out of safety.
Before the interval, MCWJEF were on a trajectory with a great passage of the ball where the midfield duo Felix Asou and Kingsley Richard dictated play.
Despite the early miss by Tamunosusu, he made it count when another opportunity came his way in the 53rd minute. A fine finish into the back of the net by the MCWJEF attacker after Ibinabo Ajibo’s effort came off the bar for him to score.
Obi Mobility substituted players that couldn’t create any goal-scoring chances. Chika Eguma and Kolapo Ismailia all came out for David Opara and David Nwisah. The changes had little effect on the MCWJEF side who got their first win after the blast of the full-time whistle.
Ndubuisi Ihejirika of MCWJEF said his side deserved the victory.
“I deserve it because, after our first game, we went and did some homework from the lapses of the previous game. I knew that we would win the game.”
His counterpart, Obi Mobility said it was a bad day in the office.
“We didn’t expect the result but it’s a game. We couldn’t convert the chances we had in the game but we will do better in our next game.”
