Rivers United are back to the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League with a narrow 1-0 win over Adamawa United who together with Abia Warriors continues its search for a first win of the season.
Here is our Matchday 7 Round-Up.
We start in Port Harcourt where Rivers United returned to winning ways after the defeat to Kano Pillars on the previous match day. Fortune Omoniwari did the job for the Pride of Rivers in the 53rd minute, condemning Adamawa United to their fifth defeat of the season which leaves them at the rock bottom of the log. Godwin Aguda also missed a penalty during the 1st half.
Enyimba moved second with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kastina United. Tosin Omoyele was definitely the star of the match as he missed a penalty but made amends by scoring the winner just before half-time. The record NPFL winners made it back-to-back victories for the first time in the season having recorded a 2-1 win against Adamawa United in Bauchi on Monday and are level on point with Rivers United but with a lower goal difference.
Sunshine Stars also recorded a back-to-back victory for the first time in the league this season with a 3-1 win over Rangers International having also recorded a 2-1 win over Dakkada FC in Uyo last Sunday. Sad’eeq Yusuf Ahmat, Fuad Ekelejuoti, and Chinedu Udechuchwu got the goals for Sunshine Stars while Godspower Aniefok scored the consolation for Rangers who are without a win in their last three matches. Both Sunshine Stars and Rangers International were reduced to 10-men after Bright Akpojuvewho (Sunshine Stars) and Ifeanyi Nweke (Rangers Int’l) were sent off in the 78th minute.
Ifeanyi Ubah recorded just their second win of the season beating Wikki Tourist by a lone goal. The Anambra Warriors got their goal as early as the 17th minute through Ugochukwu Ifejiofor and were able to hold on to it till the end despite attempts from Wikki to salvage at least a point from the game.
In Kaduna, Jigawa Golden Stars beat Heartland FC with the 3 goals being scored in the last 8 minutes of the match. Bright Onyedikachi put Heartland ahead with a ferocious shot in the 82nd minute but two minutes later Saidu Abdullahi leveled for the hosts, and when it looks like it will end in a draw, Samuel Stone Onukwube scored for the Stars right at the death to as they snatched all three points.
Dakkada FC returned to winning ways thanks to Aniekan Okon Ekpe’s brace as they ended a four games winless run with a 2-0 win over Warri Wolves
Aniekan opened the scoring at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium five minutes before the break and later completed his brace from the penalty spot in the 52nd minutes, ensuring Warri Wolves return to Delta empty-handed.
A goalless draw with Kwara United at Soccer Temple, Agege extends MFM FC winless run to four in the league. The Olukoya Boys who last tasted victory in the South West derby against Sunshine Stars have now drawn four games in a row, becoming the team with the highest number of draws in the division.
In Makurdi, there was nothing between Lobi Stars and Abia Warriors as the much-anticipated encounter ended in a 0-0 draw. The draw means that Lobi Stars miss out on a chance to go top of the log while Abia Warriors are still in search of their 1st win of the season.
