Action at the Port Harcourt leg of the Neymar JR’s Fives
More than eighty football clubs in Port Harcourt and beyond have signed up and registered to be part of the 2019 edition of the Neymar Jr’s Five a side competition sponsored by Red Bull.
The three day Five a side competition holds at the Treasure FM/ NTA football pitch at Mgbuoba and promises to be an exciting one.
Already, three female teams with a small mixture of boys have registered to play in the tournament.
Coordinator of the teams, Matilda Oyilola told that her girls would not be fazed by the gender of most of their opponents.
“Is it not football? Aren’t we going to play it? They know what is up against them and they will play,” Matilda said. FC, FC, Ikwerreman1000 FC, V 10 FC are some of the names who have registered to play in the tournament.
Miebaka Obuoforibo told that V10 will be involved in sports development.
“We opened as a bar, lounge and Night club a few months ago but we have understood that as much as we are in the hospitality business, we also need to be part of the daily lives of Nigerians.
“We just partnered with and gave out our space to host a Pool League that ended on Wednesday and now we have registered a team to play in the Neymar Jr’s Fives. We will continue to be involved in sports as much as we run the club,” Obuoforibo told
Bayo Akande is coordinator of the event and he believes this is the time for people in Port Harcourt to hit stardom from the streets.
“In 2017 it was De Rock FC here in Port Harcourt that made it to the National finals, won and then were in Brazil for the World finals and got to the quarters.
“I believe they have made a name for themselves and there will be one or two other teams that would want to go the way of De Rock FC from two years ago,” Akande told
De Rock FC will be part of the 2019 edition in Port Harcourt but they have been given a free pass on registration and they will have a guard of honour mounted before they play their first game
