It’s another weekend with plenty of football actions taking place across leagues in Europe, Africa and Asia.
The Russian Premier League, Belgian Jupiler League, Bulgarian Parva Liga and Slovakian Fortuna Liga become the latest set of European leagues to commence the new 2020/21 season.
However, the focus will be on the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 ties holding in Germany and Spain.
In Germany, Nigerian born English youngster Tammy Abraham and his Chelsea teammates have the herculean task of overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit against the German Bundesliga Champions, Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Unbeaten in all competitions since December 7 (W26, D1), Bayern Munich’s first-leg win was their sixth UEFA Champions League (UCL) victory via a margin of 2+ goals this season, including all three clashes with English opposition. Netting 2+ goals per game while winning all three UCL home matches this season, Bayern are unbeaten as hosts in all competitions since November 30 (W12, D1). Furthermore, they’ve won their last seven fixtures here, with six producing over 2.5 goals.
Chelsea, meanwhile, come into this match after a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup final that extended their run of competitive games without a draw to 14 (W10, L4). However, not since September have they followed up one loss with another next time out (W10, D3).
Unbeaten in all three UCL fixtures on the road this season (W2, D1), six of their last seven victories in Europe came via a one-goal margin. However, it’s been four competitive away matches since the ‘Blues’ last kept a clean sheet, whilst it’s worth noting that no team has ever recovered to win a UCL tie after losing a home first leg by 3+ goals.
Elsewhere, in Spain, Napoli, almost concluding the signing of Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen, have a daunting task of outscoring Barcelona at Camp Nou after holding the Spanish giant to a first leg 1-1 draw.
Barcelona have seen five of their last six UCL games feature both teams score and the opener netted by the 30th minute. The hosts scored the opener three times during that period, but are winless in the last three competitive matches in which they conceded first (D1, L2). The hosts have scored just one goal in four of their last six home games (W4, D1, L1), and will be concerned by the fact that they’ve failed to lead at HT in their last four matches here (HT: D3, L1). Napoli finished the Serie A (SA) season in a disappointing seventh position, but did lose just two of their last nine SA fixtures (W5, D2, L2), despite both teams scoring in seven. Scoring first could be crucial though, as ten of Napoli’s last 11 competitive games that didn’t end in a draw (regulation time only), saw the winner net first.
In Africa, South Africa becomes the latest African country to resume football action after the Coronavirus induced break, with the Nedbank FA Cup resumption.
Amidst these crowded fixtures across Europe, Asia and Africa, we have carefully picked a few matches in this Home Wins ACCA Special
